Welcome Home Farm

Hey friend! I’m so glad you are here. My name is Ashlyn; I’m a wife, mother, nurse and aspiring homesteader. I am always trying and learning new things and making my fair share of mistakes along the way.

I thought I should probably begin by telling you (briefly) about my family and our story; who we are, where we came from, what we’ve done, and what we plan to do.

I was born and raised in a smallish town in North Carolina. If you would have asked me growing up if I would ever moved away, I would have told you “Absolutely not!” but God had a different plan for me.

Jon and I have been together since my senior year of high school. He is a year older than me and joined the Army as I was entering nursing school.

We managed a long distance relationship for much longer than either of us wanted to. Jon was stationed at Fort Campbell, KY which was hard, but doable. There were a lot of God moments in that time, things that worked out in just the right way that there could be no other explanation. We eventually got married in August of 2016 during my summer break in nursing school.

After our honeymoon we went into a long distance marriage until I was done with school. Unfortunately, during this time, Jon received orders to deploy. The day before he was due to leave, I found out I was pregnant. What a crazy time that was! So here I was: a pregnant newlywed, in my fifth semester of nursing school, with a deployed husband.

This is pretty much theme for the early years of our marriage. Everything happening fast and all at once. Throughout Jons military career we had a lot of ups and downs. We learned to lean on each other and make it through in the hard times. In the span of seven years we had four children and moved seven times. Even if that doesn’t sound crazy, I can assure you, it was.

Jon was medically retired at 10 years of service and we FINALLY got to move back home. We moved into his mother’s old house that is on a bit of land and I have slowly started to grow our farm. We have had all kinds of animals but currently we have chickens and goats.

That is the main focus of the blog, to share things I am trying, learning and screwing up along the way.

After about 2 years of being home, we found a piece of land to build our forever home on. We are currently elbows deep in the process and it has been a wild ride. The new land means that we get to basically start our farm over and correct mistakes we had previously made. I get to grow a larger garden and maybe even have a cow. We also have more space for our boys to grow up.

Jon and I have done a lot in the almost 10 years we have been married but I think the best is yet to come and I can’t want to share it with you!
